Tour Leading - Would you like to experience one of the best jobs in the world?

Interested? Then read on for more information and if you would like an application pack email us at tljobs@imtrav.net

Maybe we’re biased, but we think that being a tour leader is one of the most exciting jobs you could ever do. You get to spend time in some of the world’s most wonderful places; your working day may involve sailing down the Nile on a felucca, trekking in the jungles of Northern Thailand or walking the Great Wall of China. You will meet many interesting people from all different walks of life. It is a stimulating job with never a dull moment. Tour leading is fun, and an organised leader has plenty of time to relax and socialise with their groups. Make no mistake however, this is a demanding job both physically and mentally and we insist on a high degree of professionalism.

What qualities do we look for in our Leaders?

The tour leader is responsible for the smooth running of the tour and for ensuring that our travellers have the best possible time on their holiday. You will be primarily concerned with their health and safety and their enjoyment of the tour.
Some of the skills and qualities we look for are:

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • A desire to provide high levels of customer service
  • Great organisational skills to ensure the flawless running of tours
  • Enthusiasm for travel, the job and the countries where we operate
  • Ability to handle pressure and turn a negative into a positive
  • Effective decision making and problem solving skills
  • Professionalism at all times

What does the job entail?

The tasks are many and varied but here are some that our leaders are involved in doing each day:

  • Checking the group into hotels, confirming transport and guides
  • Accompanying the group on excursions
  • Teaching the group how to do things like ride a camel (or donkey etc)
  • Making recommendations for free time
  • Taking the group to local restaurants
  • Giving briefings on the local culture and on health and safety
  • Talking to all members of the group and making sure the group dynamics are working
  • Maintaining paper work and tour accounts

And from time to time they may need to:

  • Sort out the traveller who left their passport in the previous hotel
  • Handle complaints
  • Respond to health and safety issues

What will you get out of the job?

  • A competitive package with a range of benefits including free accommodation and medical insurance
  • Comprehensive training in the UK and destinations including a first aid certificate
  • Flights to and from your destination and all internal travel associated with the job
  • An understanding of other cultures that travel does not bring and making friends all over the world
  • Increasing your communication, organisational and people skills
  • Experiencing the great satisfaction of a challenging job
  • Knowing you have assisted your groups to have an unforgettable holiday
  • Enjoy being part of a great team of people all committed responsible travel and to offering a style of holiday they can recommend wholeheartedly

What should you consider before applying? There are a few things to consider before you apply for a tour leader position. If you are concerned about any of them it may be that tour leading is not for you. Please recognise that:

  • Tour leading is not just about getting paid to travel the world it is hard work that requires dedication and commitment.
  • This job is primarily about working with people and you need to be comfortable with this and enjoy it. You will be putting your group’s needs before your own at all times.
  • You are not on holiday you are working to ensure that every single person on your tour has the best time possible.
  • You are on call 24 hours a day.
  • You are on the go a lot of the time. Every week or two you will start a tour and meet a new group of people who you will then have to farewell. It is not easy to develop long-term relationships under these conditions so from time to time it can be lonely.
  • Group members may get sick and you will have to deal with this and where necessary ensure they have appropriate medical attention. This is not always a pleasant experience.
  • Some group members may suffer ‘culture shock’, complain a lot or seem to dislike you. Despite these things you must be professional at all times and provide excellent service to every member no matter how they are behaving.
  • Our tour itineraries are fixed and you will have to follow them. You can in a year run the same tour a number of times and despite this you need to remain just as enthusiastic as you did when you started.
  • We make every effort to support you in all situations however from time to time something can come along where you will need to think on your feet and be confident to make a decision.
